On October 24th, 2012, Dora and I started cosmetology school. We looked like just two simple new students. What all the students and instructors didn't know was that Dora was very shy and we both had trouble speaking and reading English.
During that time Mrs. E was the Phase 1 instructor and she asked me why did I want to do cosmetology? I told her that I just came here for my sister. I had no interest in cosmetology, but because Dora had trouble speaking English I came to help her communicate better. Mrs. E was surprised at what I said and wanted to know more about my career goals. I told her I wanted to be a fashion designer and make luxury clothing for men. I really didn't think cosmetology was my thing. She asked how Dora made me come with her to the school. Had she put a gun to my head, she jokingly asked. I laughed, told her no, and explained our situation. Two months ago Dora told me that she had found a cosmetology school that she was going to check out because they were offering her a tour. She went and met Ms. Heather and took her tour. A week after she acquired more information about the school she told me that they only were giving classes in English and she proposed to me that I enroll with her so I could help her. Of course I said no, but she kept telling me to enroll in the school every single day, all day long. I don't want to seem rude, but I was so annoyed that she always asked me the same thing every single day. I told her that cosmetology wasn't my thing and I wanted to be a fashion designer. Some weeks passed without Dora mentioning the school. One day I realized that I was being selfish and that I wanted to make a difference for those who I can. I told her today is a perfect day to start living your dream and that I will sacrifice my dream for hers. I really wanted to help her become a beautician and not to get hired for a job where she would help build someone else’s dream. Mrs. E told me I was a really good brother and one day I would be rewarded for being this amazing. At first it was really hard for me, I couldn't understand anything! It was frustrating learning to roll a perm and I hated pedicures! When we got to Phase 2 Mrs. Terri helped us to get better. It was the same styles and hair cuts but more advanced techniques. I had a really dramatic change because I was starting to feel confident and excited about finishing services. I started liking cosmetology because Mrs. Terri didn't let me quit on hair cuts or hair styles that I thought were hard and couldn't finish. When I got on to the clinic floor Mr. Glen helped me a lot. He has been a really good instructor as well as a great friend. I have learned the color system though him and I am planning to be a color technician. Dora and I have learned a lot of new things like a lot of different braids from Mr. Glen. We have a great time laughing, making jokes, and following instructions from the staff. Since being at I.T.S. Academy I have built up my confidence and sophistication as well. We want to thank everyone that helped us and pushed us to become better and finish school. Mrs. E, Mrs. Terri, Mrs. Asia, Mrs. Jackie, Mrs. Debi, Mrs. Lawanda, and Mrs. Candi for believing in us. Ms. Heather, Mrs. Kendra, Mrs. Cobie, Mrs. Nikky, Mrs. Melanie as well as Carly and last, but not least, Mr. Glen for being our friends and mentors. Today, the 17th of April, 2014, a year and six months later we can walk out of the door and show the world our talent.
